Whole System Approach which is an operationally focussed research and innovation SME established this year. Drawing upon over a decade of practical experience of its founder, Laurence Marzell in leading research and innovation projects for Serco’s UK & Europe division, Whole System Approach is an agile methodology to simplify and support better informed decision-making within complex and dynamic environments. It recognises that within such environments, multiple stakeholders and their many separate interests, sit side by side with a need to better understand collective risk and work collaboratively to achieve shared outcomes. Whole System Approach recognises that within such environments, everything is connected. Thus, to achieve better informed decision-making amongst multiple stakeholders in pursuit of shared outcomes, there needs to be a Combined Effect of the Collective Effort. And this needs to be conducted in a sensitive, agile, and evidence-based way. Whole System Approach does just this, to achieve practical translation and exploitation of research and innovation outputs into day-to-day operational needs on the ground. Centred around six key capability areas that sustain both the physical and human aspects of operating within complex environments, these are: Governance, People, Process, Technology, Information and Infrastructure which together, provide any organisation or system of multiple organisations needing to work together, with the building blocks for their function and operation; either as single entities or as integrated System of Systems. Whole System Approach aligns governance and operational delivery at the intersection and boundaries between organisations, whether public, private, voluntary and community, focussing on how these organisations need to come together to better understand, manage and meet their shared needs and outcomes.
